Cross compliance
Water for life and livelihoods, River basin management plans, Glossary, Published by the Environment Agency in 2016, defines cross compliance as: ‘A form of conditionality by which, farmers in receipt of the Basic Payment through the Common Agricultural Policy are required to comply with European Union environmental legislation, called Statutory Management Requirements. For example, the Nitrates Directive set standards for maintaining land and the environment, called ‘Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions’ (GAECs), this includes providing minimum soil cover and buffer strips next to watercourses.’
